Strength training for over 40s in Blackheath

Lift for Longevity is a small group strength session for over 40s at 7 Delacourt Road. Learn to lift safely and confidently, with strength, balance, mobility and bone health as the point rather than the numbers. Your first one is free.

What Lift for Longevity actually is

A small group strength session built for people over 40 who want to learn how to lift safely and confidently, rather than guess their way around a gym floor.

  • Small group, not a class of thirty. Your coach can actually see what you're doing and say something about it.
  • Strength, balance, mobility and bone health are what the session is built around, not how much you can shift.
  • No experience assumed. If you've heard strength training matters more as you get older but had no idea where to start, this is the room you were looking for.
  • Your first session is free, so you can see whether it suits you before paying for anything.

Who leads it

Coached by someone who specialises in this

Lift for Longevity is led by Rachel Dobson, a personal trainer and health journalist who specialises in helping over 40s.

She knows the questions

The ones people are slightly embarrassed to ask about joints, backs, hormones and starting late. They get a straight answer rather than a shrug.

Technique before load

You'll learn how to use resistance training properly first. What's on the bar follows, at a pace that suits you.

A room you'll recognise

Core's membership is mostly local and mostly women, across a wide range of ages. Nobody is going to make you feel out of place.

"I've left it too long" is the most common thing we hear

It's also almost never true. Coming to strength training in your forties, fifties or sixties is a completely normal starting point, and it's the one this session was designed around.

  • You don't need to get fit first. That's backwards, and it's the single most common reason people never start.
  • Everything scales. The movement stays the same, the load and the range change to suit you.
  • Tell the coach what's going on. A dodgy knee or a long gap is useful information, not a confession.

A note on health advice

Resistance training is widely recommended for maintaining strength, balance and bone health as we age, and that's the thinking behind this session. We're coaches, not clinicians though. If you have a medical condition, an injury or anything you're unsure about, speak to your GP first and then tell us what they said, so we can build the session around it.

Common questions

Before you come down

Do I have to be over 40 to come to Lift for Longevity?

It's designed around people over 40, and that's who it's written for. If you're close to that and it sounds like the right fit, get in touch and we'll tell you honestly whether it is or whether another session suits you better.

I've never lifted a weight in my life. Is this too advanced?

No. It assumes no experience at all. The whole point is learning how to lift safely and confidently, so turning up knowing nothing is the expected starting point rather than a problem.

Is it going to be full of much younger, much fitter people?

Not in this session. It's a small group of over 40s. Core's membership overall is mostly local and mostly women, across a wide range of ages and abilities, so it's a mixed room rather than a competitive one.

Is strength training really that important after 40?

Resistance training is widely recommended for maintaining muscle, strength, balance and bone health as we get older, and that's the thinking behind the session. We're coaches rather than clinicians, so for anything specific to your own health, your GP is the right person to ask.

What if I've got an injury or a health condition?

Tell us. Speak to your GP first if you're unsure, then let the coach know what they said. Movements get adapted around you, which is far easier in a small group than it would be in a big class.

What does it cost?

Your first class is free with no card details taken. After that a single class is £20, or The Core Membership is £149.99 a month for every class on the timetable. There's no joining fee and no minimum term.

Can I do personal training alongside it?

Yes. Ten one-to-one sessions are £400 and stay valid for three months. Plenty of people use a class for structure and PT to work on something specific.

Where exactly are you?
