A gym for people who aren't gym people

Coached 45-minute classes in a small Blackheath studio where the movements scale to you, the coaches learn your name, and nobody assumes you already know what a kettlebell swing is.

The honest bit

Most people walking in have barely trained

The hardest part of joining a gym isn't the training. It's the idea that everyone else already knows what they're doing and you'll be the one who doesn't. At a studio this size, that assumption falls apart in about ten minutes.

  • Classes are capped and coached. Someone is watching your form and correcting it, not sitting behind a desk.
  • Every movement scales. There's a lighter version, a heavier version, and a version that works around a dodgy shoulder.
  • 45 minutes. Long enough to do real work, short enough to fit before the school run or after a shift.
  • You'll be asked your name, and it will be remembered. That is the whole point of a boutique studio.

What's on

The classes, in plain English

Stronger

Our dedicated strength session. You work through the key lifts and supporting exercises with coaching the whole way, so you improve how you move before you worry about what's on the bar. Runs as full body, lower or upper.

Engine

Endurance work built from base, threshold and speed training. Intervals on the cardio kit, running and simple movements, with your coach telling you exactly how hard you should be working.

Move

Mixed-modal conditioning. Circuits, intervals, rounds, partner work and AMRAPs, so the format changes but the purpose doesn't. Every exercise is demonstrated and scaled.

Lift for Longevity

A small group strength session for over 40s, led by Rachel, a personal trainer and health journalist who specialises in exactly this. Learn to lift safely while building strength, balance, mobility and bone health. More about this session

Mums & Babies

Strength, fitness and functional movement for mums getting back to training, adapted to where you are postnatally. Your baby stays with you, and feeding, cuddles and nappy changes are all completely welcome. More about this session

Who trains here

A mixed room, on purpose

Core has been on Delacourt Road since October 2021 and the membership is mostly local and mostly women, across a wide spread of ages and starting points.

It's also an explicitly LGBTQ+ friendly studio and a transgender safe space. That's on our Google listing because it matters more than it should have to.

Seven coaches, 30 years of coaching between them, two of whom own the place and are on the floor most days.

Common questions

Before you come down

I've never been to a gym class before. Will I be out of my depth?

No. Classes are capped and coached, and every movement has a scaled version. Tell the coach on the way in that it's your first one and the session gets set up around that.

Do I need to be fit before I start?

No, and that's backwards. It's the single most common thing that stops people starting. Coming back after years off, after an injury, or from nothing at all are all normal starting points here.

What if I can't do an exercise?

Then you do the version you can. The coach will give you it before you have to ask. Nobody is left standing there working out what to do.

How long are the classes?

45 minutes. That's deliberate: short enough to fit around work and family, long enough to be worth showing up for.

Is it mostly young gym people?

No. The membership is mostly local and mostly women, across a wide range of ages and abilities. It's a small studio, not a big-box gym floor.

What does it cost to start?

Your first class is free. After that a single class is £20, or The Core Membership is £149.99 a month for every class, with no contract.
